چکیده

This paper discusses Japanese discourse in the Centering framework, by analyzing what we call the ‘forwardlooking centers’ in Japanese complex sentences containing an adverbial clause of reason. Naturally occurring discourse was collected for this research, and a hypothesis is made that, at least in headfinal languages, the forward-looking centers in the matrix clause are ranked higher, by using the ‘Matrix-higher’ way, than those in the subordinate clause for the maximum degree of coherence in a discourse segment. This paper first introduces the background of Centering, both the general notion and the application of it to various languages. The specifics of Japanese that are relevant to Centering are explained in Section 3, and the issues on utterance units are discussed Section 4. Section 5 shows the research procedure, and the results of the data analysis in Section 6 suggest that the matrix clause in a complex sentence be analyzed before the subordinate clause so that the better transition types are selected. Finally, a few further research topics are introduced that remain untouched in this paper.

Functional Centering

Based on empirical evidence from a free word order language (German) we propose a fundamental revision of the principles guiding the ordering of discourse entities in the forward-looking centers within the centering model. We claim that grammatical role criteria should be replaced by indicators of the functional information structure of the utterances, i.e., the distinction between context-boun...

A Property-Sharing Constraint in Centering

1 A constraint is proposed in the Centering approach to pronoun resolution in discourse. This "property-sharing" constraint requires that two pronominal expressions that retain the same Cb across adjacent utterances share a certain common grammatical property. This property is expressed along the dimension of the grammatical function SUBJECT for both Japanese and English discourses, where diffe...

Processing Local Coherence of Discourse in Centering Theory

In this paper we will investigate the centering theory proposed by Grosz, Joshi, and Weinstein (1995) (henceforth GJW) and revised in Walker, Joshi, and Prince (1998) (henceforth WJP), and argue that their theory needs to be further extended and revised. We show that the centering theory proposed by GJW and WJP would make wrong predictions about the preferred transition states in discourse proc...

Centering and noun phrase realization in

Centering Theory is applied to a narrated film retelling in Kaqchikel Mayan in order to better understand discourse constraints on the form of referring expression. It is shown that Backwards Looking Centers are very often encoded by zero pronouns, and that center Shifts more often employ full pronouns and full noun phrases than do center Continues and Retains. Preverbal pronouns and full noun ...

Discourse Coherence and Shifting Centers in Japanese Texts

In languages such as Japanese, the use of zeros, unexpressed arguments of the verb, in utterances that shift the topic involves a risk that the meaning intended by the speaker may not be transparent to the hearer. However, this potentially undesirable conversational strategy often occurs in the course of naturally-occurring discourse. In this chapter, I report on an empirical study of 250 utter...
